Based on Bourdieu, Lamont and Lareau (1988: 156) define cultural capital, and its function, as “(…) institutionalized, i.e., widely shared, high status cultural signals (attitudes, preferences, formal knowledge, behaviors, goals, and credentials) used for social and cultural exclusion.” This definition highlights that cultural capital can be invested to create more (or other types of) capital and fundamentally serves to exclude others from advantaged social positions. Cultural capital, also from Bourdieu, includes non-economic resources that enable social mobility. Examples of cultural capital would include knowledge, skills, and education. Both concepts remind us that social networks and culture have value. Bourdieu discussed other forms of capital, including economic and symbolic.
